I lost one of my keys and began the process of getting a new one. To save money I bought a refurbished OEM key with the same FCC ID and Part Number. Key arrived looking to be in perfect condition. Just about everything I read online says I MUST get a locksmith to program this key.
Called up a local auto locksmith (the only one in my area) and he said it was going to be $115 to program pass/fail. He went one to tell me that 60% of the keys people buy online end up failing. Needless to say, it makes me quite nervous to possibly throw away that money if the key I bought does not work. Of course, I did my research and made sure I bought a virgined key and it is an exact replacement for my current key. The locksmith said he could sell me a guaranteed oem key for about for $120, plus the $115 to program (if my memory serves, forgot his exact quote). Or he could sell me a key that will start the Mitsubishi, but will not be able to remote lock/unlock for $90 total.
The dealership will charge me $120, so I am almost thinking it would make sense to just bring it to them, but they might hassle me about the key. They also will likely be pass/fail so????
Finally, here are my questions:
1. Is it true that there is NO way to program this key by myself, at least insofar as to test the key I bought? If there is a way to program it, what is the procedure.
I found this https://www.programyourremote.com/cl...ting-9150.aspx
2. If the above answer is No, should I heed to warning of the locksmith and just buy new or he just trying to cover his *** so to speak.
3. Other questions I am not thinking of?
Looking for any advice, opinions, anything helpful would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.
