Has anyone successfully self-programmed a third smart key? There is a sequence in the owner's manual to do it (sorry Canada, not you), which involves inserting the blank key into the key slot below the HVAC controls. I tried it a couple times and got nothing from the blank key. Going to try it again, but thinking a cheap third-party key won't accept the self-programming. The blank key looks nearly identical, save for the Mitsubishi logo on the back.

Just to close the loop on this, I did get it to work. The manual's instructions were not very clear, so I tried a few different ways, and by the fourth or fifth try the third key accepted the programming. $23 key off eBay. Would have cost hundreds for OEM key and dealer programming. Just get one that looks like yours ... 2 or 3 buttons, depending on whether your model has power lift gate.

Default How did you do it?

Hey just bought on of these cars yesterday and only has one key. I'm looking to do the same thing as you. What did you do to get it to work in the end?

Follow the instructions for customer FAST key programming in the owner's manual. The important detail for me was to just push and release the LOCK button in the instructions. The way it is written is not clear, so I had been holding the lock button down too long for the procedure to work. Once I tried just push/release on the LOCK portion of the sequence, it worked.

But the procedure requires you have two functioning keys; it's basically there to allow you to add a third or fourth key. If you only have one functioning key, you're stuck with the dealer programming it.

Any good OBD-II tools out there to do a FOB with only 1 active key, I'd rather pay $200 for the tool then $150 for the dealer for 15 minutes of work.
