2016 Outlander Sport
Hey everyone,
i am new to the forum and have been dealing with an issue regarding my outside temperature reading on my display. The temp is not showing, and will randomly come on if it is raining/snowing but will read a random number and display the “possible icy roads” warning. Is this a display issue or a temp sensor issue? Hopefully someone can help on here as the closest dealership to me is about 40 mins away. Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum!
Based on your symptoms it appears to be a discontinuity in the electrical circuit. Please download the service manual from this forum (link found in one of the sticky threads, 2011 model year will serve you well). Look for the wiring diagram of the external temperature sensor. You may have a loose connection or a broken wire somewhere. Rainwater closes intermittently the circuit and that is why you get some reading when it rains. That also tells you that the problematic wiring section must be exposed to water, so my guess is that the issue is near the sensor itself. Follow the wiring from the sensor (found in the upper left corner of the lower section of the front grill). To check the wiring you most likely have to remove the front bumper, so the service manual will come really handy.
In addition, please obtain a cheap code reader as you must have either B1034 or B1035 DTC (diagnostic trouble code) stored in the ECU. The former indicates a short, while the latter an open circuit in the ambient temperature sensor circuit. The best and te cheapest solution if you do the diagnosis and the fix yourself but if you are not feeling skilled or brave enough to tackle this problem do not take your car to the dealership. Any service station/garage near you should be able to fix it, especially if you provide them with the proper diagrams (bumper disassembly, wiring of the ambient temperature sensor etc.). Remotely possible that the sensor itself is defective (if the plastic housing is broken) only then you need a dealership to get a new sensor but I would rather look for a junk yard and pull a sensor from any 2010 and up Mitsubishi vehicle.Good luck and give us a feedback on your progress.
