Midtown Toronto dealer wanted $137 + tax for 4L of DiaQueen J3!!!
You can buy the same 4L of J3 oil from cherryhilltriplex.com for $58 and go to your trusted mechanic.

I have had many battles with my service department over service requirements over the years, and I work at one. I contacted Mitsubishi Canada who told me that as long as I maintain my car according to the 6 months / 12,000 km schedule, use synthetic fluids and do not do any towing I would be ok (they wouldn't give it to me in writing though).

I have a '05 Lancer with 158,000km and a '09 Outlander XLS with 52,000 km. I use synthetic oil in both and service it every 12,000 km. I do the "severe" service but I skip the 6k oil changes. The 6k, 18k, 30k, etc. are just oil changes. My '05 works like new so I don't regret doing the extra maintenance.

Mitsubishi has addressed the issue for 2011. Originally they tried making a standard schedule of 6 months / 12,000km but the service departments went up in arms. They were afraid they would start loosing money. I argued that people, for the most part, want to service their Mitsubishi at the dealer but it is cost prohibitive. If we had a less expensive overall service schedule we would have more return customers.

Of course my opinion doesn't count for anything and Mitsubishi made a compromise of 5 months / 8,000km. It no longer matters if you use synthetic or conventional oil (WHAT??). Mitsubishi clearly started out with the best of intentions because of the number of customer complaints. That is the only way things will ever change.

I often hear people make legitimate complaints on message boards but never call the toll free customer relations line. As much sympathy as everyone here gives none of us can do anything about it. If you don't like something put your thoughts together and call or e-mail. You might not get quick satisfaction but they are listening.
