I hate to say it, but we'll never see it in our '16s. Mits doesn't have the money or motivation to do it. They'd have to spend money on cars they already sold, plus loose an incentive to have people come back and buy a new model for the new features.

Sadly I have to agree with you. Seems Mitsubishi is more concerned about people buying new than supporting current owners. Maybe they should realize that there may be a reason less people are buying new ones and switching to other brands.
We upgraded from a 2014 to our 2016 for all of the mechanical and ride improvements. Certainly not going to upgrade to a 2017 just for a radio and 4 way cameras.

and DRLs on auto. This one kills me. I'm too lazy to fiddle with ETACS. I'd gladly pay someone if they want to do it for me. Lol.

Sent an email to Mitsubish inquiring about the possibility of an upgrade to the audio system. As I expected here is their reply:

Thank you for providing Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. ( MMNA ) the opportunity to review and address the concerns regarding your 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander. Please accept our apologies for our late response to your email, but we have been experiencing an unusually high volume of inquiries. We value each of our customers and your concerns or questions, and we regret that we have not been able to respond promptly.
Unfortunately, we are unable to provide information or instructions on how to perform modifications or alterations to a specific part or your vehicles current design. We instead recommend that you contact your local Mitsubishi dealership to have any needed services performed. They can also assist with ordering parts and answering any questions regarding compatibility of parts. Trained Mitsubishi technicians are in the best position to perform any remedies or repairs and install additional features to Mitsubishi vehicles. You can locate a dealership near you by visiting us online at www.mitsubishicars.com and then selecting Find a Dealer at the top of the page, or click here.
We apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced.

Pretty clear by the canned response they have no desire to support existing customers. I didn't ask for advice on modifying anything.
Here is my email to them:

When I purchased my 2016 Outlander SEL with navigation I was told by the salesman (yes I know- he's a salesman) that an upgrade to the audio system to allow Apple carplay would be coming out on the near future. I know the system is Linux and pretty much anything can be programmed in. I'm not asking for free- willing to pay for the upgrade. Please don't give me the "call the dealer" suggestion or "Upgrade to a 2017". I upgraded from a 2014 to a 2016 for its new features.

Pretty clear no one actually read or paid any attention to my request.

Put Mitsu on the defensive and hope they will consider doing what Ford did. On the other hand, Mitus sells peanuts so not sure if it's worth their cost/effort... Ultimately, you need a bunch of owners (all Mitsu cars using RF) to band up to speak as one.

Just my 2 cent, I've recently bought a 2016 outlander because here, in Portugal, the 2017 still doesn't have android auto, meaning I would have to w8 till 2018, probably. The dealer also specifically said the MMCS unit will not be easily 'converted' to SDA (what Mitsubishi calls their android auto units). So, I'm not holding my breath. I am however curious about what silentnoise713 said:

If this is true, it would mean the Outlander with SDA will not have a working GPS without a phone. This makes me think its not such a good idea to have SDA after all. I couldn't however confirm anywhere that Android Auto requires the phone's GPS... Did I misunderstood?

RE: 2017 no longer having standard (built-in) nav read below. You can also browse the US site and it does not reference standard satellite navigation. Someone with a 2017 can further confirm.

Consumers typically don't understand there's a difference between Assisted-GPS (smart phone base) vs GPS (stand alone); both have advantages/disadvantages. Android Auto/CarPlay does NOT require a stand alone GPS antenna b/c it uses your phones A-GPS antenna and smart phone app for maps. Has the benefit of live traffic updates (thanks to your data plan!) but less responsive and less accurate. Also, it seems CarPlay uses are stuck with Apple Maps - Yikes!
