Default Break-in and first oil change

Classic "metal shavings" thread.

Q: Should I be changing factory fill oil early? Like in 1k on the odo? You know the sand from forging/metal shavings etc?

Even earlier. Start the car for the first time with normal non synthetic oil. Change it after the first 20 miles of driving it. Then change it again at 100. Then switch to synthetic at 2000 miles.

Wow, I wish I woul've read that article sooner, I'm already at 600 odo, I hope its not too late to do a proper breack in. So I guess I should change my dealer oil right away, then again 100 miles after, then switch to synthetic.

The break in has already been done. That happens in the first 20 mins the motor runs.

My last car I changed oil at 1000 miles and 3-5k from then on. At 115k miles or 185k km, engine was in top shape and never drank a drop of oil before trade-in for outie. Probably will go that route again.
1000 miles or 1600 km - dino oil change
4000 miles - synthetic switch
3-5k miles oil change intervals from then on.. with synthetic.
Except this time, I will keep the vehicle for 200k miles or 320k km or 10 years.

Manual says 500km as break-in but I agree that there is a theory out there that piston rings get seated within 50km and most likely before you get your hands on your new baby. Imagine some bloke at dealership or at factory does the break-in for you [:'(]

Where are you from?

The break in happens in just a couple mins. Not even 50km

I tend to trust the manufacturer more than some guy on the internet with a theory about breaking in motorcycle engines. The fact is, if Mitsubishi is willing to put a 10 year warranty on the engine it is in their best interest to recommend the most effective method of break-in. You can be absolutely sure that Mitsubishi (and Honda, Toyota, BMW etc.) have done a LOT more research and seen the internals of way more engines than the motorcycle guy.

Also, keep in mind that our Outlanders most likely store the critical engine data for the techs to see. I'm going to do what the manufacturer recommends.

You are right on. That topic has been discussed to death on BITOG(bob is the oil guy) site. However there is no consensus. Except that Honda puts it explicitly NOT to change their factory fill early. Mitsu doesnt say so. In my last car, I changed factory fill at 1k and I never had issues with it. Engine was like new when I sold it at 115k miles. Ofcourse, I used mobil1 synthetic 5w30 from day one on that.
