I will be in the market in Spring to replace my Malibu lease and the Outlander is on my short list.
I want something good for the WI winters. I've see great deals on 1 yr old rental vehicles and the great warranty is a plus. I really like the 2019 LE with the blackout pkg. Is the 2019 noticeably better than the 2018? Also are the factory Toyo's as bad as the reviews I've seen? I've heard that the AWD system is one of the better ones. Back in the day I had an 85 Montero with front and rear limited slip that was awesome in the snow.

I'd appreciate any input.

With all the Rebates and incentives available might be worth it buying new during black Friday or Christmas and get the full new vehicle warranty/experience. I have a 2008 Mitsubishi Outlander XLS V6 and it has been very good to me.

 

Yeah I would consider new but by Spring of next year the 2019's will likely be gone and the brand new design probably won't have much discount.

 

We're on our 2nd Outlander. First was a '14 SEL drove it 55k miles with only 1 warranty repair. Our current Outlander is a '16 SEL with 75k miles on it & the same 1 warranty repair that was fixed in half a day. I haven't been in a '19, but I know they finally added rear a/c & heat ducts which honestly is probably the biggest gripe on our '16. With the kids in the 3rd row in TX summers, it is hot back there. My only other gripe is they must have made a change to the front seats from '14 to '16 because our '14's front seats were a lot more comfortable. We have the full leather interior, heated seats, sunroof, Rockford Fosgate audio system, exterior appearance package & tow package.

The exterior appearance package (front, side & rear aero + larger rear spoiler) and the tow package are dealer-installed options. Our side "ground effects" pieces were put on with pretty flimsy double-sided tape and have separated in several spots. Not so much that they are coming away from the vehicle, but you can see a gap when you open the door. The dealership said they would cover it under warranty, but not something I really need to leave the vehicle there for when I can fix it myself. They also have to cut the rear bumper to install the tow package, and the selling dealer didn't do the best cutting job - it looks aftermarket. Other than that the vehicle has been pretty much problem free for 75k miles.

The one bad part is the value tanks so if you plan to trade it in in a couple years be aware. We bought our '16 at the end of '16 when they were running end of year sales. Got $5,000 off & ended up out the door at about $31k. I just checked the trade-in value today because the wife wants something new & it's sitting at about $10k So even with the 2% interest we're paying on the loan, we're way upside town if we wanted to get rid of it.

The other thing to consider if deciding between new & used is the 10 yr/100k warranty is only for the original owner. The 2nd purchaser receives the remainder of the 5 yr/60k warranty.

 

Thanks for the info. Good point about the powertrain warranty on used. I know the residual is crap on these so I plan to keep it at least 5 years. I've seen mid-level awd 2018's. with less than 20k miles for 18-20k so I hope I can find a similar 2019 next year in that price range.
