Default Crusher washer for oil pan plug

So this is a stupid question, when you put the crusher washer on the plug, does it matter which way you put it on (one side is smooth, one has a groove in it). I think I am leaking oil and am wondering if the mechanic put it on the wrong way (or does it matter)

I would think the smooth side faces OUT (or UP) while the groove side makes contact with the plug

Thanks!

I do not think it makes a difference.

shouldn't make a difference. you sure he put one on at all? I made the mistake once of not putting one on the first time I did it.

Or he just re-used the old one?
They are ment to be a once-only item.
If it has no cracks or splits in it you may get away with re-using but you normally need to torque it up tighter to stop it leaking then risk stripping the threads or getting the plug stuck.

Personally I would suggest using a flat copper washer, does not matter which way round it goes then but you do need both mating surfaces to be clean and un-damaged before fitting.

For a 2007-2010 XLS; 6 Cyl, 3.0L it would be a 14mm. Ask for an M14.
