Default DRL question - am i losing it?

I have an XLS with the HID's so my fogs are my Daytime Running Light's. I am assuming that when the car is turned on (day or night) the DRL's should be on...right? I know they've been on in the past, so here's the situation:

This morning we had a couple inches of snow so i went out to dust off the snow and started up the car for the wife and kids, and no DRL's came on.I turned on the HID's and they worked fine. Turned them off and no DRL's again. It was still a little dark out so i thought maybe they are on a light-sensor or something so you don't forget to use the regular lights at night. There is a street light across the street that was lit and pretty bright on the hood, so if there is a sensor i'd think it would have tripped and the DRL's should have worked.

Can anyone confirm this? Do i have a problem with my DRL's? Am i losing my mind?[]

I don't have HID's so I can't confirm this, I have had cars in the past where the DRLs would turn off if you put the parking brake on, did you have the parking brake when you checked?

I didn't notice if the brake was on, but i'm guessing it was when i started the Outtie up. However, I had my wife put it in drive before she pulled away and no DRL's came on which has me worried.

Bueller, Bueller? Anyone have an idea?

I read all the previous 266 pages (holy shiznit) of DRL posts and nothing about when the DRL's come on/off except for when the HID's are turned on/off.

...by the way if anyone needsgood laugh read that monster DRL post...i was rolling in my office at everyone freakin about the different lights on the 2nd gen models.

Your parking brake was on. Thats why they were off. Otherwise you have a problem.

DAY-time running lights, meaning they are on during the day as well. The sensor has nothing to do if they are on or off. They are on all the time till you turn on the HID's.

The only thing i can think of is that my wife put it in gear before taking off the parking brake...hmmm i'm gonna have to lay the smack down when i get home[sm=chairshot.gif]

Whati meant about the sensor was that maybe there's a sensor that only allows them to come on during the day...kind of like a reverse of what most auto-function headlight sensors do. That way you have to turn on your HID's at night, otherwise no lights. To me that would be a smart feature to have for DRL's. I know with my work car i've driven home in the dark several times without ever turning on my headlights because ofthe DRL's. Very unsafe because there's no rear lighting with DRL's. Hencethe reason i don't particularylike them.

I'm sure i'll figure this one out, right now i'm just [sm=headbang.gif]

I have never used the e brake but everytime my outlander has been on the DRL havebeen on. Night, day, in direct lighting, it doesnt matter they were on. The only time my DRL arent on is when I have the HID lights on.

Because of the weather over here (ice/sleet storm)I still didn't get a chance to figure out if this is an issue with my car or simply a case of not realizing what i was doing. I'm sure it was a mistake on my part, either the brake was on or something like that.

I appreciate everyone's help trying to figure this out.

Found out if the E-brake is on the DRL'sare noton. However, if you take off the E-brake the DRL's come on, but ifyou never take it out of "P" and put the E-brake back on the DRL'sstay on. Weird.

I tested it too. The DRL's only are off if you start the car with the e-brake activated. In P or not. When you release the e-brake the DRL's come back on, and stay on whether or not you putll the e-brake again.

Cuffy, just make sure the wife doesnt drive off with the e-brake on. I might of barely been on though...
