Default Engine light

Hey guys. I just had my outlander in to have the drivers side upper control arm done and a couple days later the engine light comes on. The mechanic wanted to charge me a $90 diagnostic so i got the code read by part source for free. Its 0456 small evap leak. What am i looking at repair wise? Im hoping its just a hose!! Could the mechanic of set it off by taking the filler neck and some canister(i forget the name) out to replace the upper control arm? My first mitsu so im out of my league.....love the car so much but if it continues like this repair wise.........not cool!

Any advice would be great

you need to include more information. the 2007+ outlanders do not have upper control arms as they use struts instead of shock absorbers.

edit: After reading another post of yours, sounds like you were only working on the rear of the vehicle...which the service manual does have an upper arm. The Evap cannister is close by, see the attached picture from the service manual. It would be possible that wires/hoses could still be disconnected or were damaged.

She is an 2003 outlander. Yes all the rear suspention has been replaced except one lower link I don't remember what side. Is it common for this car to use oil? When the light first came on I checked all the fluids and the oil needed to be topped up bad, below both notches on the dipstick.

Any vehicle as it ages will start to use oil. You just have to check it every once in a while. I check mine as I gas up...usually. I wouldn't start worrying too much until you start seeing blue smoke puff out the back...then you either fix the issue or run thicker oil!
A clogged up PCV valve will make an engine consume more oil. They are pretty cheap and good maintenance if not already changed. It basically releases pressure from the engine block back into the top of the engine. There is a lot of oil fume in that air, so the PCV valve will get gunky over time. Once that valve clogs, the fumes have no where to go except forcing it past the pistons...taking more oil with it. A similar thing happens to the IAC (Idle Air Control). It uses some engine air and eventually gets fouled up...but usually you can just clean them up with carb/brake cleaner.
