Default Excessive Smoke

Hi all, have a 2015 2.2 D.i.d. and for 2nd time in a couple of weeks exhaust smoke was blowing in through air vents and out the side of the bonnet. After the 1st time we replaced the exhaust manifold gasket which we knew to be faulty but this doesn't seem to have done it. Doesn't happen all the time so I don't expect it to be cracked manifold or anything like that. Anyone have any thoughts?

I also Read somewhere they do this when its running a DPF regeneration? Anyone heard of this or what the solution is?

Thanks

There will be a crack in the exhaust manifold, on the left side by the small pipe hat goes to the EGR transfer port in the head. When the car does a DPF regeneration this will smell and leak more..

The Regeneration is a feature of the car, and is needed to keep the DPF clean.

Did you replace the gasket yourself?

Thanks for that. No didn't do the gasket myself mechanic did it. Would the crack be easily visible? Expensive repair? sorry for all the questions.

labour would be same as for replacing gasket. Price of the part? No sure on that.

Normally the bolts by the manifold where the crack is are covered in soot. It is a thin crack, but goes all around the pipe. The manifold has 5 outlets, the thin one at the end is the culprit. In situ you might need a small mirror to see it

What if the grey diesel smelling smoke is coming out of the exhaust and is grey with this engine? Surely wont be the crack thats causing that too right?

Thanks

If it is not winter nor cold weather, grey or white does not sound good. Oil and/or cooling fluid leaking into cylinders may cause white/grey color meaning that gaskets are leaking. Check coolant level.
