Fuel Economy dropped
Ive searched the forums and never really came up with what I was looking for. I have a 2012 XLS and was doing great with fuel until last couple of months. We do pretty much all city driving, so I know thats going to decrease economy as well. However, when we first bought it last fall, I was averaging 12-14l/100km which I thought was pretty good for city driving. However, since winter started, I'm now showing 26/100km on the screen. That is doubled from what Im used to. Would winter really have this much effect on fuel economy? It has a remote starter that we use quite often and idles for 5-10 mins before we leave. Using winter tires as well and temps here lately is between -5 and -20 degrees Celsius. Thanks!
Just figured out this forum and managed to see new posts haha. I just saw your post milliesdad and its pretty much the same thing. I wouldn't have posted if I saw it earlier. Seems like it is a winter thing. However, I'm not sure why its showing 26l/100km on the trip computer. Would idling with the starter throw these numbers way off?
Yes, I'd imagine idling will do that. It's similar to getting stuck in traffic. Here in the US, winter blend gasoline has a noticeable effect on my mpg. I have heard of other members from a different forum that type or brand of tires would also result in less mpg. You mentioned you're using snow tires now. Is it the same size as the oem? Also, sometimes even if it's the same size, other tire brands would also make mpg go south. Wife is now using general altimax arctic 215/70/16 snow(vs all-season 225/55/18) with 4wd all the time- our mpg went down but it's all worth it during this winter season! My wife felt more confident tracking the mountain zigzags with these shoes
.
Btw, were u using just the 2wd during the fall season and switched to fulltime awd now?If yes, that will drop your mpg, too.
SERPENTOR is correct- tire pressure drops when it's colder and that will negatively impact your gas consumption, as well as premature tire wear.
