Default Fuel pump/sender my 2007 MK2 diesel 2.0did

Hi all
Can anyone answer why there are 2 sender's in fuel tank on outlander MK2 one drivers side and a fuel pump and sender unit under back passenger side ? .
I only ask as I have fuel service required and no fuel gauge working and I am trying to get to the bottom of it .

I have the 4WD C-Crosser and replaced the fuel tank, so had new one on the bench to check before I installed. I think the smaller one is to pump fuel from one side of the tank to the main sender pump. The tank straddles the prop shaft and without out the extra pump, fuel would only be drawn from one side. On my UK model, the main pump and fuel sender unit were in the side of the tank on the same side of the fuel filler neck. Mine has the 2.2 PSA engine, so not sure if that makes any difference?
