Default Help! Brake light stuck on (outlander phev)

Hi all. Just wondering if anyone has had (and more importantly, solved) this issue.

The brake lights on my 2016 phev have come on permanently three times in the last 8 months. I’ve taken it back to the dealer twice already and they’ve “fixed” it.

The first time (in Nov last year) it was due to a flat battery because someone left an interior light on. Battery charged up, problem seemed to go away.

Second time, about five weeks ago, there was no indication of a battery problem. Took it into the dealer, they thought it was the etacs unit, and unplugged everything from it, and plugged it all back in. Problem seemed to go away. Normally the dealer will film a little video to show you the problem, and can be very specific, but this time they were a bit vague. They told me it was more expensive than last time because they’d had to remove the bumper etc to get to it. I was just relieved it was working again.

Two days ago the brake lights came on again. Have booked it into an auto electrician this time, as after the last time I’m not confident that the dealer will fix it. I can’t afford £400 for fixes that only last five weeks.

has anyone had this problem, or anything similar? There've been only very minor issues with the car in the three years I’ve had it. Any suggestions much appreciated.

I’m not familiar with your year, but there is a switch/sensor (sometimes mechanical, sometimes electronic) that takes care of the light business beyond the actual braking when you press the pedal. Check that…usually a cheap part. Sometimes you need a contortionist friend to replace it. That is a shot-gun approach, but a likely culprit from my experience.
