New Outlander, 3800 Mile Road trip, few things
So got my new Outlander GT and took it on a 3800 mile road trip which I just finished (Don’t even have license plates yet) ... So a few things came up... Interested to know if any of you have run into these things...
- Vibration around 30-45mph ... I’m thinking maybe one of the wheels is slightly out of balance? Going to take it in and have that checked. Once I get up to about 50mph it is gone.
- At 1030 miles I got the “4WD System Service Required” error. I had been keeping the vehicle in AWC ECO mode. The error cleared after I shut down the car and restarted it, have not seen it since... Also going to mention to my dealer.
- Three times I heard what sounds like a motor running that seams to come from the dash area, no clue what it is, turned everything off (radio, AC, etc.) and sound still there, it remained until I turned vehicle off and then back on again... I have no clue what this could be.
A few times during my trip for no apparent reason my cruise control stopped functioning with an “ACC TEMPORARILY NOT AVAILABLE RADAR BLOCKED” error. I was in normal dry conditions, nothing blocking any radar or sensors. I was able to reactivate the cruise control after some time (10-20 minutes?). Oddly enough on the last day when I was in snow and it seemed the sensors could be blocked it had no issues.

Oh and almost forgot the burning rubber type smell that comes through the vents and is noticable on the passenger side outside of the vehicle after it has been driving for awhile ... Almost smells like a belt, but the belts are fine ... I’ve seen others report this type of thing too in my search but nothing recent... This one annoys me a bit.
my guess, you have a failing blower motor in the dash...could give a burning smell and is the only large motor in the dash. only other motor that may be in the dash is a small motor for a HVAC blend door.
other issues sound like either shorting or loose wiring. no clue if this is a brand new outie or new to you. if new, would bet on loose wiring. if new to you, then would bank on wiring shorting out.

it is brand new 2018.
Thanks for your reply — I originally thought blower motor too, which is why I tried to turn off everything to make sure the motor would not be in use. The rubber smell can be smelled from outside of the vehicle as well, seems stronger on the passenger side. The motor sound was only a couple times and went away when I turned it off then back on.
Definately going to bring it in and let them look at these things ...

Ok, so quick update on the vibration... The dealer had the car yesterday and part of today and they have determined that the tire balance etc. is all correct, the vibration is coming from the transmission (torque converter?).
They have been working with Mitsubishi to try and figure this out and now Mitsubishi is thinking that this might be a computer / software update that needs to take place to fix it? Not sure what to think of this but then again I’ll be honest I’m not sure how much impact the computer / software has on modern transmissions. They took another GT off the floor and were able to get the same vibration on that vehicle.
Bottom line, no fix at this point for that... Possible software update in the future...
So ... Other 2018 GT Owners ... Have you experienced this?

Hi, I just bought an outlander in the fall and it had the same burning rubber smell coming in when I pushed it hard the first few months, and smelled worse outside. It gradually faded. I asked the dealer and they checked and said that it was undercoat that was burning off the catalytic converter. It totally went away by about 5,000 miles.
Sorry to hear about your other problems. A high speed shake is almost always a wheel balance or a tire separating. The transmission sounds unlikely. A second opinion at another dealer probably wouldn’t hurt...

I'm noticing the smell less now, so I'm also hoping that it will fully dissipate as the miles pile on! Thank you for responding with your experience with it.
