Default Noise drive shaft

I have a 07 Outlander (with 99K) that has been making a noise when driving. I took it to Firestone this week and they said the center support bearing is causing the noise and the whole drive shaft needs to be replaced ($1850.00 with labor).
I'm considering taking the shaft off, disassembling the bearing, re-packing it and seeing how long I can go without buying a new shaft at $1000+. I'm also wondering if anyone has tried to replace just the bearing with something aftermarket? My concern is that if I buy a shaft from the dealer that it will eventually have the same problem.

Any feedback will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi, I drive a concrete truck for a living. We do all of own maintenance on our trucks. The bearing the are talking about is what we call a carrier bearing. This part should be a replaceable. I would call the dealer and see how much they want for the bearing. If they are not willing to sell it to you (assuming it can be replaced) I would call a shop that just does drive shafts. ask them if they can install a new center bearing. If they say yes and you can take the shaft out yourself and take it to them and have it done. Also you might have them replace the U-Joints. 99K they are probably about ready to go out as well. Get all this done and reinstall the shaft and you should be good to go. Good luck, Dave

Grab the service manual and have a look at volume 2, group 25...that covers the driveshaft (propeller shaft). The manual makes no reference for disassembling the shaft.

I suppose you could keep it in 2WD mode, remove your drive shaft and try to re-pack it. otherwise, i'd be looking at used units. oemmitsubishiparts.com has it for 830.

Default Not replacable

The center support or carrier bearing on a 2007 Mitsubishi outlander xls AWD is not replacable. You have to replace the entire shaft which you can find for $400 on carparts.com and only takes about an hour or less to change. This is a common problem on this vehicle between 100k and 150k miles.
