Default o4 outlander engine reset

hi, i'm new to this forum and would like to pick the brains of some of you outlander owners...
the engine management light on my 04 petrol outlander is and has been on now for quite some time now, the car runs perfect with no issues or problems, but the engine light stays on...

does anyone here now how to reset it so it goes off and stays off (untill of course, there is an issue and it needs to warn me of it!!!)

thanks in advance

in the states, some parts stores will let you use a code reader to look at the "check engine light". You can then google the code it outputs or post it here, we'll try to help as best we can. sometimes it is just a sensor that may not be critical, but may help be more efficient.

thank you for the replies, i have plugged a fault code reader into the DLC (data link connector) and it reads "02 sensor heater circuit malfunction - bank 2 sensor 1"

can anyone help me with the location of the heater circuit sensor, bank 2, sensor 1...

many thanks

Sensor 1 would be before the catalytic converters. But as far as banks, that gets tricky. Hopefully Manybrews sees this and can say which side. I've tried to search and usually they say the side with cylinder 1 is Bank 1...but I've tried looking through the service manual and cannot find a firing order or other diagram that says, "this cylinder is #1"

Isn't this a 4cylinder outlander (2004 as posted)? Wouldn't that just have a single "bank" of cylinders in a row? V6 and V8 engines generally have two banks of cylinders across from each other. I've never seen a 4 cylinder with a separate O2 sensor for single or pairs of cylinders. There's usually just one before the Cat converter and one after.

I'm not really all that familiar with the older ones and it didn't sound like he's from the states, so no clue what engine is in there. And I agree, on a 4 cylinder, I'd assume there would be one before and one after the catalytic. But then again, it is saying Bank 2...I don't know but I'm sure Manybrews does.

I can't speak for that model, but O2 sensors are commonly found at auto parts stores. I replaced one on my truck when it hit 150k miles and it cost about 50-60 US dollars and are relatively easy to replace. There is a small wiring clip to disconnect, then unscrew them out. The tricky part is getting to them.

I've always been told that you cannot clean them. Those are one of those sensors where you can run around just fine with a failed one, but you won't get as good gas economy. The sensors measure gas levels before and after the catalytic converter. Based on those levels, it adjusts how the engine runs to get the best economy. Without them, it runs on a basic standardized parameters.
