Default Are OEM radios compatible across generations?

So I just recently entered the Mitsubishi club after buying a 2012 Outlander GT a couple weeks ago.

My Outie has the RF sound system, but a non-navigation radio. I would like to upgrade to a navigation unit, and would prefer OEM, but I don't really want 8-year-old tech. Is it possible to install a 3rd-generation nav unit in a 2nd generation Outlander and maintain all of the steering wheel controls and RF functionality?

Buy yourself a gps unit from amazon and stick it in the cup holder, like I did , a lot cheaper and with map updates.
