With 18" rims, I think, there is no other available combination of Width x Ratio that will give the product 225x55%=123.75 so as to keep the diameter of the wheel even nearly constant (eg 215x60%=129 ). So I suppose the 16" is one solution. The same solution was adopted by Mitsubishi, I have a picture of an Outie which was supposed to act as support vehicle in the aborted 2008 Paris-Dakar, which wears 16" and BF GOODRICH off road tyres. Thx.

I came accross my Service manual CD and looked it up, this is the excat wording used.

"
DRIVING ON SANDY OR SLUSHY ROAD

As the vehicle is intended for on-road use, long-time driving on a sandy or slushy road must be avoided. When the vehicle is driven on a sandy or slushy road for a long time, the fail-safe function of the electronic control 4WD system tends to enter the protective control mode which switches the control from 4WD to 2WD gradually in order to protect the drive system, and the indicators ("4WD" and "LOCK") tends to illuminate."

That's interesting, probably the most interesting piece of information I have read all day... AND I agree 4WD is needed the most during those times so it doesn't make sense that Mitsu. would disengage 4WD to 2WD in the middle of a crazy snow storm or desert driving... mind you how the heck does the Dakar 4WD system work? does it also disengage after 2 hours? LOL... That's like a dissaster waiting to happen or getting stuck on the side of the road...

Or maybe a feature Mitsu puts in it to stop people from driving like a madman without the Ralli-tronic black box (sold by Mitsu for about $900, harness included)

who knows...

it will only disengage when the system overheats. you will get a warning for it first.

Any one came across a descent "INCLINOMETER" for dashboard placement, something like the "artificial horizon" used in planes & I think Pajero as well?
