Evolander

Headlining the marquee of Mitsubishi's SEMA display is the Evolander
concept. This unique vehicle, created by the Mitsubishi Research and Design
of America (MRDA) team in Cypress, California started life as a 2007
Outlander, which is an all-new addition to Mitsubishi's line-up that goes
on sale in November. The creative minds at MRDA sought to infuse the
Evolander concept with performance elements and design cues inspired by
Mitsubishi's omnipotent, race-ready, super-sedan, the Lancer Evolution. An
exploratory concept, the Evolander represents the design and engineering
possibilities of what could be an Outlander Ralliart production model in
the future.

For the Evolander, the output of the Outlander's 3.0-liter V6 engine
(normally rated at 220 hp) swells to 300 hp with the help of an
ATI/Roadrace Engineering Procharger system that uses a centrifugal
compressor to produce 6 psi of boost. The increased power is fed through a
6-speed automatic transmission that is actuated by the same magnesium-alloy paddle shifters that will be equipped on the next generation performance
model. The Evolander puts power to pavement using Mitsubishi's newest
electronically-controlled AWD system offering exceptional, rally-car like
roadholding in an SUV. The list of Evolander's dynamic enhancements also
includes a Roadrace Engineering/Muellerized coilover suspension system that
enhances handling to help dice corners with precision and exceptional
control. The Evolander rides on lightweight 20-inch OZ wheels wrapped in
high performance Yokohama Advan ST performance rubber. Brembo's new
6-piston monobloc-style brakes squeeze massive cross-drilled front rotors,
and a set of cross-drilled rear rotors were added to help bring the vehicle
to a swift, safe sudden halt.

The Evolander's exterior design follows along an "urban performance"
theme, and shares several characteristics with the Lancer Evolution sedan.
The Evolander's fascia design mimics that of the Evolution vehicles with
its cavernous cooling and brake duct intakes and an aggressively vented
hood. The Lancer Evolution also lends its iconic, rally-inspired, box
flares to the Evolander, increasing the width of the vehicle at the fenders
by 28 mm. The Evolander also features a more aggressive aerodynamic
treatment, with lowered side sills, fender vents, a rear diffuser and a
Ralliart rear spoiler that add a "sporty urban" look to the SUV.

The Evolander's stylish interior fuses sporting elements of Evolution
with the technology features found on Outlander. Recaro Sport form fitting,
reclining racing seats cradle and support driver and passenger helping
improve a driver's seating position and vehicle control during aggressive
driving. The interior still maintains full use of the 2007 Outlander's new
30 GB hard-drive navigation system (with 1200 song music storage
capability), as well as the rear DVD entertainment system, and the
eardrum-rattling Rockford Fosgate 650 watt audio system.

Would love an evolander. The catologues aren't exactly what I expected. Very little outlander stuff.

 

Very limited selection for the Outlanders

 

Mitsubishi Motors launched the all-new Outlander at the 2006 Paris Motor Show. To be launched in Europe during the first quarter of 2007, Outlander will allow Mitsubishi Motors to enter the fastest growing SUV segment (up 54% from 325,000 in 2001 to 500,000 in 2006 and with further 35% growth expected between 2006 and 2009), right in the heart of this sector, against the likes of Toyota RAV-4

With its Europe-only “Mount Fuji” grille, the 4.64 m long Outlander-Concept is a further showcase of Mitsubishi Motors’ strong visual identity, while its wide stance, muscular fenders and sharp lines leave no doubt about its dynamic abilities. Lean, Outlander-Concept brings drama without gratuitous effects, its kicked-up window line, piercing headlamps and 20” specific wheels giving the appearance of permanent motion.
It will be presented in a sporty metallic red with silver accents (roof rails, side body strips, door handles, front skid-plate, grille surround).
A derivative of the all-new Outlander launched in Japan in October 2005 and with sales still going very strongly in Japan (24,627 sales October 2005 / July 2006), Outlander-Concept will preview the upcoming Euro-spec. Outlander.

Outlander Concept sports an eye-catching Red Metallic body finish using silver accent coloring for the grille, roof rails and other elements to give a sporty dash to the overall appearance. The car rides on 20-inch 6-spoke alloy road wheels that give the lower body a tauter look as well as leaving no doubt as to Outlander Concept’s on-road SUV personality.
The powertrain mates the 2.0-liter 16-valve DOHC direct-injection diesel engine that produces maxima of 103 kW and 310 N-m and powers the Europe-market Grandis sedan to a 6-speed manual gearbox. Outlander Concept uses a diesel particulate filter (DPF) to meet Euro-4 emission standards.
The driveline uses an electronically-controlled 4WD system developed from Mitsubishi Motors’ All-Wheel Control (AWC) approach to deliver optimum drive torque for any particular situation or driving conditions and realize economy and go-anywhere performance that do justice to an all-round SUV.
All-round independent suspension delivers responsive and accurate handling with a pliant ride. The aluminum engine hood, as used on the Lancer Evolution, reduces roll to improve road holding and increase stability.
In-car entertainment is provided by the same 650 Watt 9-speaker Rockford Fosgate Premium Sound System™ acoustically tuned to the interior of, and well-received on, the Japan market Outlander.
New dimension

Whilst MMC’s seventy years of 4x4 heritage makes Outlander-Concept a very legitimate SUV, it also gives this car licence to challenge an increasingly crowded and predictable segment with design, technology and features to suit.

As such, it will prove a very different animal from the first generation Outlander / Airtrek / Airtrek Sports Gear, as it was designed from the outset for world markets, incorporating “must-haves” in each and every regions.
In the case of Europe for instance, the availability of a Diesel engine (with DPF filter, according to models and markets) from start will allow it to challenge the heart of the market, covering 63% of the segment, as opposed to 37% for its petrol-only predecessor.
Mount Fuji

Since its introduction in Europe in 2003 with Lancer and then followed by Evolution VIII, Colt and Grandis in 2004, Mitsubishi Motors’ signature “Mount Fuji” grille has been warmly welcomed by media, customers and dealers alike, creating for the first time a clearly recognizable visual identity for the Brand.
In the face of this success, MMC has decided to make it specific to Europe, where it reflects acknowledged Mitsubishi sporting heritage and sharp Japanese modern styling. Therefore, this is no surprise for the 4,64 m long Outlander-Concept (vs. 4,54 m for the outgoing Outlander) to be a further showcase of this strong visual identity, highlighted through the satin finish of both slates and surrounds as well as the trapezoidal shape of the LED headlamps.
Clearly inspired by the 2002 Pajero Evo 2+2 concept up to the A-pillars and windshield, Outlander- Concept’s front design blends into the muscular fenders with flared wheelarches and sharp lines, leaving no doubt about its dynamic abilities.
Wide (1,80m), lean and low, Outlander-Concept brings drama without gratuitous effects, its kicked-up window line, show car piercing LED headlamps (as well as mirror-mounted side repeaters) and 20” six-spoke specific alloy wheels, giving the appearance of permanent motion.

The rear sends the same dynamic message, doing away with “wannabe” external spare tire for the striking arch-like combination of LED wraparound combination lamps and black privacy backlight.

Driver’s

Leaving the role of authentic off-roader to Pajero*, Outlander-Concept is nevertheless a no-compromise solution for a different type of recreational vehicle.
Using the in-built adaptability of MMC´s new global platform, it brings passenger car-like levels of active safety and driving pleasure, thanks to its 4-wheel independent suspension, high performance brakes and low center of gravity. The latter is helped by an aluminium roof panel, using a technology tested with the Lancer Evolution IX.
Less extreme than the rugged, transfer-case equipped Pajero*, Outlander-Concept aims at fulfilling the requirements of an all-weather grand tourer, on road or on track, featuring an all-new All Wheel Control drive-train. Marrying the Active Stability Control technology (incl. Traction Control) to an electronically-managed 4-wheel drive system, it allows smooth progression on dirt tracks or in difficult weather conditions, from 2WD (for better fuel economy when maximum traction is not required) up to a “Lock 4WD” mode. The transition from 2WD to 4WD is easy, the driver needing only to turn the illuminated easy-to-grip dial positioned prominently between the front seats.
Engine-wise, Outlander-Concept is powered by a derivative of the Volkswagen AG-supplied 1,968 cc, turbo-charged w/intercooler, DOHC, 16-valve, EU-4 compliant Diesel powerplant fitted to the recent Grandis Di-D.

A Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) will be made available on the upcoming production car – according to models and markets - whilst further engines will be launched alongside later on, including an all-new Mitsubishi Motors-developed 162kW / 220ps petrol V6 with MIVEC variable valve timing technology, plus a 125kW / 170ps variant of the new petrol “World Engine”.
A multifunction steering wheel with audio, cruise and Bluetooth handsfree controls will, on automatic versions of the production car, house shift paddles allowing keen drivers to change gear quickly while keeping their hands on the wheel.
Outlander Concept uses the same split tailgate as the Japan market model with separate upper and lower sections that facilitate loading or unloading of different sizes and weights of luggage. It also uses the same fold-and-tumble second row seats and occasional-use third row seats, normally stowed under the floor, to produce a cavernous luggage compartment or to provide seating for seven as required.
