Puddle lights on Outlander

Puddle lights on Outlander
Hi
I've got a 2011 ZH Outlander 30th Anniversary Edition (Australian).
It's a 2.4L AWD with a mixed set of add on’s from various models including keyless entry, leather / heated seats with electric driver’s seat (which was an option on the top of the range 2.4 XLS model) among other things. Sometimes you're lucky and score a good deal - I know I did !
I've not done any customisation beyond adding a towbar (hitch) as I'm more than happy with it the way it is. I have thought about the idea of adding some puddle lights - I was thinking some sort of LED strip would be the easiest to fit...
I've done a search of the forums but can't see that anybody has done this before - either that or I searched for the wrong thing.
Originally I thought of putting them on the underside of the doors so they come on when you open the doors to get out similar to this:

rather than outside on the body work like this

because I was thinking they'd be less obvious and be less likely to be damaged or get dirty (not that I've do any off roading).
When searching to see if anybody has done this before I found that some cars fit them under the door handles (way too hard to do after market) or under the mirrors which may be feasible...
The more I think about it under the body or mirrors mean they can come on when you unlock the car using the remote.
What would be perfect is if you could have them come on when you open any door (getting out), ideally on a "follow me home" style timer, or unlock the car using the remote.
Has anybody got any ideas if this would be easy or hard to do ?
Thanks for any ideas.

My NS Pajero had puddle lights in the mirrors. I recall they operated with the doors if the lights were on and also with remote locking / unlocking. Maybe you could look at them to see if they might fit Outlander mirrors.

I'd imagine an "easier" but less versatile method would be to install in the bottom of the door cards, and run in parallel with the interior festoons?
I just made comment to my wife the other day about the lack of red light in the door card (can't remember what that's called) when you have the door open at night, something I retrofitted to my two Magnas as it came in the Veradas and higher-spec Magnas. Some versions have a red top half and a clear bottom half as a puddle light, some cars have it wrap around the bottom of the door card so the puddle light is more effective.
I'm not up on which models came with what, but I'm not aware of this sort of thing existing on any Outlander?
