Speed sensor failure

Speed sensor failure
I have a 2009 Outlander with 80,000 miles. Never any problems since having it at 40K miles about 2 yrs ago.
I had a speed sensor fail on the rear right wheel. Dealer quoted $775 for new hub bearing assembly and new sensor (talked them down from $1000). Private dealer said the assembly had no play and that just the sensor needed to be replaced. Private dealer also said that when replacing these sensors a lot of times the assembly will crack or break and the new assembly may be needed. Also mentioned could be a problem with drive shaft.
2 questions:
1) If there is a problem with the drive shaft, should this be covered under a typical 7 or 10 yr warranty? ( I did not purchase an extended warranty)
2) Does this problem (speed sensors failing) happen frequently with these cars, and can there be typical reasons they fail short of the hub bearing assembly failing or having play?

Honestly, first thing I'd do is replace the sensor:
RockAuto Parts Catalog - Speed Sensor
It really isn't hard, remove the wheel and a few bolts. be sure to use WD-40 or some other penetrating oil to remove the sensor. I had to remove mine when replacing a rear differential output seal. The speed sensor "assembly" bolts one way into a housing. If you use a penetrating oil...take your time, you should be able to get it out just fine. If you break it the old one, well..now you have a new one. if you don't feel comfortable doing this yourself, then I'd highly recommend going to a NAPA shop or some other independent shop for these repairs. There is nothing dealer specific or magical about these parts.
1 - I do not think this would be covered under a drivetrain warranty.
2 - I've had one of my rear sensors go out at 45k miles. Luckily, I was still within the warranty period. I have not heard anyone else complain of it. I have a thread on it when it happened, years ago.
Removing the hub is a bit more work since you have to remove the CV shaft/axle and torque everything back correctly...but something any shop can do. parts are reasonable as well:
