Is it actually safe and okay for the vehicle to switch from 2WD to 4WD auto to Lock when the vehicle is at speed, ie @ 60 KM/H.

I only use the 2wd for crusing on the hightway in the summer timre and in the city I always use the 4wd auto mode summer or winter I find that it's the setup that works the best with my XLS.

Default torque

With 90% of its maximum torque available at 2000rpm, it's no wonder the 6cyl will spin its front tires quite easily. Leaving it in 4wd auto will curb that behavior, but if you have a 2wd you're stuck with the spin. Go easy on the throttle.

Tires, tires, tires. I've upgraded the stock tires and that behavior is virtually gone, it only happens when I floor it but still not as bad as on stocked

I also had this problem so I just leave it in 4WD at all times. The Outlander feels more solid in 4WD anyway.

When I'm averaging 12 L/100km with 40%city/60% highway, it doesn't feel too solid..it uses quite a bit more in fact when 4WD is enabled.

The dealer had said that it was just a couple miles less per gallon when in 4WD. I haven't noticed anything more extreme than that. If I start to run out of gas money I may pay a little closer attention...

Same here! I have my winter tires on, will remove them next weekend, but I put in 4WD if I have to make a fast jump out into traffic. I get a some wheel spin and the traction control kicks in 2WD. This also happens when it is wet out with the stock tires.

Default 2WD Spin

Hello ivanz,

I have the same issue as you - 2WD wheel spin when turning from a stop. It's especially noticeable in the spring with leftover sand and gravel on the road. I've begun to leave mine (V6 XLS) in 4WD Auto until they clean the streets in April. But, even in the summer, I have learned to feather the throttle in 2WD when turning after a stop. The traction control definitely takes its own sweet time kicking in when turning - not so much in a straight line. Can't all be perfect I guess.
BTW - issue seems to be the same with new tires (Hankook H727) vs. OEM's
