Unhappy Transmission got stuck in auto mode.

Hi all. This last Saturday I went to visit some good local spots for camping and recreation. After going uphill for a while (like one hour or more) the transmission refused to go in manual mode. Tried to use the stick and shifters behind the wheel and nothing, no beeps either. When we started to go downhill i pulled over, restarted it again and it works but after several minutes the transmission set to auto mode and I couldn't changed it to manual. I have to use a lot of braking downhill. After 3 hours later, running on a leveled street it started working again.

Is there any kind of computer/sensor safety procedure/anything that prevent the transmission to be set in manual mode?

I think on the newer year models there is a safety that locks out the manual mode under conditions that stress(es) the transmission. Don't you just love the computers in our cars as well as the ones we use to post to this forum? .... LOL (BD bows to the Mitsubishi computer overlords).
