Update:
Left on my voicemail this morning from MMNA corporate,
"Ummm, I just wanted to call you first thing today and let you know that I got some information from the engineering department, umm they're actually currently testing the final countermeasure for the radio and hopeful they will have a fix in a small number of replacement units by next month. I am on their list, as a matter of fact, your vehicle was the first vehicle they had with a concern, so I'm pretty sure I will be notified and I will in turn, let you know..."
I'll keep you guys posted when/if there is a solution.

RE: Weird audio issue
Hello all,
I also have this Radio clarity problem with my Outie since I got it back in may 07. I checked with Mitsubishi Canada (I'm in Montreal) yesterday and asked them about the TT-136-54-002 bulletin that been running around since april 07. I was told that TT-136-54-002 is in fact what Mitsubishi calls a "Tech Talk" ticket. It has not yet reached the Technical Bulletin stage yet. It will when the peeps working on the Radio clarity issue will find a solution. The Tech Talk was issued to dealers to warned them as to not try to fix the problem by either;
Changing the radio in the dash
Changing the antennae
Changing the AM/FM modulator located in the roof under the antennae
Apparently, none of the above solutions were successful to have the issue corrected so far and will result in a waste of time/money from both the customer and the dealer. So, there we have it...We gotta wait until Mitsubishi Motors finds the fix and release the official Tech bulletin. Until then, if you are experiencing this issue it will not hurt to call your dealer or Mitsubishi (Can or US) to let them know about it

Don't hate on radio too much. Its free and I like it's unpredictable nature. You never know what you're gonna get.
Also, I am having this messed up radio reception problem as well. My guess is that the signal processor is having a hard time with even a little static and it's coming out all muffled. I'm thinking that even with the sound field set to "normal" is still being processed and is not just raw off the air.

RE: Weird audio issue
Heres my input. I have the issue. I also have the older antenna style.
I have sirius, the reception at the antenna was too bad to use the FM transmitter on the sirius even with the extension to put it right near the vehicles antenna.
Right now I am using a black box that feeds the sirius directly into the antenna input on the back of the OEM stereo. I do not get any fading, the sound isnt spectacular but I dont get the loss I get on FM stations.
The vehicle antenna connector feeds into the sirius box then feeds into the radio, I still get the stereo fade in and out. I wonder if it doesnt have anything to do with the cable going from the antenna to the radio. Which would be a huuuge PITA for mitsubishi to repair.

I had the same problem, until I got rid of the radio!
tried to turn off avc, nothing happen.I have the base model. The antenna is fine with the aftermarket receiver. Finally I can listen to radio as it should work with the original car stereo.

RE: Weird audio issue
Im facing the same problem with my outlander too. CDs sound great but FM sucks. The sound fades in and out even when the car is not moving! have switched off the AVC but to no effect. Wrote an email to RF and this is their response.
Lets make some noise so that they can help with the investigation:

Farish,
Still nothing, Were not getting other complaints on the same issue, so its hard to track it down.

Hi Guys, any updates from the OEM group on what could be the problem with the sound quality fades when on FM? Thanks
Response (Forrest) - 05/24/2007 11:11 AM
Farish,
Thats the first i have heard about the FM, I will bring it up to the OEM group. Aslo we made several radios over the years, with many different designs, We sell them to dealers and they chose what ones go in what cars, i dont know where or if your radio has a mute? does it say it does in the manual?

Hi Guys, I just received my Outlander XLS and the built-in system rocks! I got the 6-CD changer version without the navi screen. Congrats on a great sound system. Everyone who has taken a ride in the car commented on the sound quality.
A few questions tho..
1) The sound reception for FM is unsteady and the sound quality/level fades in and out while Im driving. Previous cars I have driven does not have such issues so its not the signal quality.
2) How do i mute the system? I cannot find a mute button anywhere esp when i have incoming calls to answer etc etc.
Regards,
Farish
