Winter Tyres

Currently running an 07 Outlander 2.0 Did with 235 55 R18 Geolanders.
Found them a little bit more slippy than I expected during the hard winter we had last year.This year going for a dedictated winter tyre possibly wheels and tyres.Myttres currently have 215/70 r 16 wheels with various tyres avialable.There is a distinct lack of choice with the current yres and for the price of 4 tyres to fit the 18 I could wheels and tyres for the 16 inch.
Has anybody done this yet,any issues can anyone see any issues changing to the 16 inch combo.

Your original tire size is suicide in the snow. We call these sleds as the tend to push the snow in front of the tires rather than riding though it.
Here in Canada as much as possible we tend to use narrower tires with a higher aspect ratio. (the vehicle minimum tire size work well)
Narrow tires run better thorough the snow and increase the pressure of the tire print on the ground, also higher sidewall save your filling from the jarring of the winter road as they offer more flexibility even in very cold temperature.
Just check the tires on rally cars....
For the outie the standard winter setup is 215x70 -16 with steel wheels.
Mine are Toyo open country G-02 but the choice is yours.
Here in Canada as much as possible we tend to use narrower tires with a higher aspect ratio. (the vehicle minimum tire size work well)

For a dedicated set of winter tires I decided on running 16" tires mounted on steel wheels without TPMS sensors. This coming winter will be my 3rd season and I'm happy with them - except for the TPMS warnings.
16" tires are standard on the lowest trim level of the Canadian Outlander so fit problems shouldn't be an issue.
Higher sidewalls which provide the benefits mentioned by Claude_A also make the outer diameter roughly the same and therefore no speedometer differences.
You'll need new lug nuts if you have the washer/mag style - steel wheels are almost always acorn/tapered style so the opening centres around the stud. There is lots of information about wheel and lug specs in the forum.
