Brand new. Bought 1st Eclipse this morning.
After purchasing my first Eclipse today I was excited to buy a few bolt on mods because it is bone stock. It is a 98 gs-spyder. I was confused. Why is my motor bigger than every other 95-99 motor besides the other non turbo spyders. How much slower is the 2.4 than the 2.0. Why dont they have any aftermarket parts that I can find? Does the 2.4 have DOHC? Please just give me what you know about the difference. I am in the Military and would rather spend all my money on my car than anything. Should i put a 2.0 in it? Would that make it faster and easier to modify? Thanks

YOu cant just drop the 2.0 youre thinking of in there, the frame is different. Theres 2 flavors of 2.0L anyway, theres the GS/RS (420a) and the GST/GSX (4g63t). YOu have a 4g64, found in the 2g spyders and in the 3g GS/RS (Coupe and Spyder).

Yes.. well sort of..... actually... it MAY be possible with the 4g64 (dont quote me on it) but I doubt it would be all that cheap to have performed. Personaly, Id just switch the heads out on it and throw a turbo on there... making it (sorta) a stroked 4g63...

Non turbo 2.0L (420a) has LESS potential power than your 4g64... but from the factory theyre about equal. I believe the 4g64 was put in there to account for the extra weight of the spyder to make it just as powerful as its hardtop counterparts.

"Drop" in the 4g63t head and you've got yourself a 2.4L turbo Spyder like Dusty stated. 4g63t guys are doing more and more.
Dusty, the Spyder bodies are the same whether turbo or N/A. The motor of a 2G Spyder is the only thing different between the two and the 4g64 is even on the same side as the 4g63
I stated "drop" in quotes because it's not really a bolt on affair, there's more to it. I'll find the link of a 2.4L swap in a few and you'll see what I mean Navyfc117.

Please give me a site where I can find mods. To start with cold air. just anything. It seems really slow to me? maybe ive been driving v-8's to long. By the way I appreciate all the help you guys have gave e so far and the quickness to respond. Forums are the greatest thing thats happened to the net. Off the subject question. are 18s to big? should I go 17s or 18s?

Thanks, Silver.. I was pretty sure of that, as they both used the same block... havent worked on many 2G Spyders (especially not N/A varieties), but it seemed right.
