"check engine soon" light problem

"check engine soon" light problem
My "check engine Light" message comes on around every 100 miles or so of local driving, but not on long trips such as 400 or more total miles. This problem's been going on for a few years. Could it be the oxygen sensor or the computer codes? I have the '03 ES Galant, 6 cyl. engine. HELP, anyone, in solving this mystery?
