cold air intake
Whats goin on fellow eclipse owners.I've have a question for anyone who knows anything about cold air intakes.I was thinking of building my own intake, the only thing im not sure of is, i hope nothing else goes wrong by me building it myself. I've heard that if a have a big enough cone and it gets wet, I could screw up my engine. i have a 97' RS, I just need some advice on what route I should take to get the right noise im lookin 4. Get back 2 me if you know anything bout this. The supplies that i have right now are just an adapter and my cone. not 2 sure what else is needed.
My son had a cold air intake on his Eclipse. The filter was located very low near the front of the engine. During a heavy rain, water got sucked into the engine. The cost to repair (including replacing the engine) ended up more than the blue book value. The insurance company totaled the car and gave him blue book value. He added his own money to that to get a replacement engine. He put on another cold air intake, but it is much shorter and the filter is much higher in the engine compartment.
Well, I can tell you this... Ive killed a motor b4 with a homebrew CAI and water... not pretty. Why wouldnt you just pick one up? Ebay has got em cheap as hell, especially for the 420a.
i've had a cold air intake on my 99gs for about 2 years now and never had a problem what so ever. as long as you don't go through any large/deep puddles you will be fine, othe than that the front bumper will protect you enough. if you are still worried, another thing you can get is called a bypass valve, AEM makes thema and i'm sure some other ppl do. basically all you do is cut ur CAI, put one end into it, and the other end of the intake into the other end of the bypass valve and it allows any water that gets sucked into ur intake to be released through the valve. but if you dont' want to mess with it i'd just go with a short ram air intake like TheEngineer said.
