Default Mitsubishi Triton Air Con Issue

I have a 2012 Mitsubishi Triton dual cab ute and in the past month the air con unit has started to play up. It would start off cold, but then after 10-15 minutes would get warm and stay warm. I took it to a mechanic who ran a diagnostic and regassed the air con unit earlier this week, but I notice when driving it that the air con unit seems to still get warm. I turn the unit off and keep it off for 5 minutes or so, and turn it on again and it runs cold. I notice also that this problem only seems to manifest during the day when it's hot, late afternoons and evenings the air con stays cold. I have it booked back in with the mechanic so they can run the car and drive it to see if it plays up for them. Spoke to the mechanic just now who says he thinks there is something making the compressor stop working. I believe the compressor and the relays are fine. Any clues?

Hi, my air con has started making a slight 'whining' noise when I turn it on, so now I'm pretty sure it's the compressor. I will hopefully get it diagnosed/repaired after Christmas.

I had it regassed at the start of the year, and that did seem to fix the problem. That said, I live in a pretty cold climate where I didn't need to use the cold air much at all, so I doubt I would have known if the air con was or wasn't working.

Hi Vickits
Had the same problem with my Triton, i wired a 12 volt light up to the compressor clutch so i could see when the air con was calling for cooling by engaging the clutch (had light next to wiper blades) When the air conditioning went hot with the light on i pulled over and popped the bonnet and could see the clutch was not engaged. To fix you need to remove the compressor clutch plate (with a small puller with 3 x 4mm bolts loosen then remove 6mm bolt in center) and remove one shim washer from where the clutch plate fits on the compressor shaft.

How do you wire that light up? I would like to do that too

I used speaker wire and connected to one end pair to small light. At the other end i connected the negative connection of the light to the battery negative post and the to the positive end i made up an adapter 2mm female lug and a flattened bootlace lug with a bit of heavier gauge cable between them. Unplug the single wire to the compressor and push on the female plug onto the compressor pin

then push the flattened bootlace lug into the plug that came of the compressor. When AC becomes warm and light is on stop and lift the bonnet and check if the compressor is engauged, if it isnt your clutch is not pulling in. Only only light and positive connection shown in pic negative is connected to battery negative post.

Same issue with mine, traced it down to the compressor clutch disengaging once hot, dont ask my why that works.....
Ended up doing what this guy did to test and hasnt missed a beat, a dodgy fix until I can replace the clutch. The air gap for my 2012 MN is .3 to .6mm, I had 0.85
