nooob with potential
forum's great [sm=smiley20.gif][sm=smiley20.gif][sm=smiley20.gif]
well,
im 19.
bought my very fisrt car.
i have a 97 eclipse gs 5 speed
130,xxx miles clean title
they were asking $3,000
worked out a deal and got it for $2,500
everything is good drives good...
except for the throw out bearing (i think its the T.O. bearing) cause when it makes that noise when i start it but when i hold the clutch down all the way it stops and when i rev it again then let go of the clutch a bit i can hear it again also when i turn for a U turn and i turn the wheel all they way to left/right it makes a noise like something is rubbing makes that styrofoam noise.. + i need to get it smogged
i have a few questions: [ul][*]would it pass smog without having to fix the throw out bearing?[*]what would happen if i dont get that fix?[*]and if i do get it fix how much are we looking at?[*]what kind of coverage should i get for the insurance? [/ul]
btw heres a pic. (i will show more pics soon)

RE: nooob with potential
The TOB has nothing to do with smog. It has to do with the clutch. Turning all the way to the left or right wouldnt cause a sound from the TOB either. That would have to do with either the drivetrain or the power steering.

RE: nooob with potential
thank you...much help apreciate it
this answers so much to my questions
the tob is not making the noise when i turn the wheel
im assuming it is what u where saying the drivetrain
do you know how much the average they would charge me to replace my tob @ the shops?
or would it be easier if i do it?
oh and the drivetrain would it also be easier if i did it?

ORIGINAL: Dusty Eclipse
Are u sure the turn thing isnt due to a CV or something? THey could be unrelated.

im not sure...
all i know is when i turn the wheel all the way to the left/right
it makes a disturbing noise

RE: nooob with potential
i think they are unrelated. Something that happens when the clutch is in or out, and something that happens when turning are unrelated. I wouldnt worry about the TOB for right now. But the sounds when turning is a problem. I dont think it would be a CV joint because usually that only will happen turning either one way or the other. Not both ways. Can you hear which side its comming from
Also when i say drivetrain. I dont mean like one part. I mean like something in that system, like the CV joint, ball joint, wheel bearing, axle, steering column, ect.

Well i have a squeeking noise when i turn my wheel, took it to midas. they told me it was my lower control arm and ball joint. Check to make sure the noise isint coming from around your front suspension. Could just be a minor problem that can develop into a major one if you take care of it soon.

Well, im not sure about the eclipse's. But on my talon you cant just buy the ball joint. You have to get the control arm + the joint. = $90.00 max and taking it to a shop shouldnt take no more than an hr to install.I wouldnt pay no more than $200.00, thats with them supplying the part and the install
