Outlander Sport Transmission
I have a 2011 Outlander sport with 2100 miles. Occasionally, the transmission seems to get hung up in a high rpm when in D, and i have to use the paddles in order shift up. Has anyone experienced this problem?
I'm guessing you have the cvt transmission? Are you on the gas when you notice this? The transmission is designed to stay at Max torque under load, that might be why it feels like that. Mine does the same.
Hi Easy 123. Yes, it is a CVT transmission and I am on the gas when it happens. I didn't know about the max torque design. I did not let it go past 4K rpm's so I up shifted with the paddles. So i guess the CVT would have eventually up shifted with no damage right? With your experience, at what rpm does the torque release? Thanks for the input
the cvt transmission is basicaly like a one speed transmission with electronicaly adjusted gear ratios. the computer makes it feel like the gears are actually changing when in reality its just the computer changing in between gear ratios. its actually pretty interesting. to answer your question it wouldnt realy "shift" it would just rev down. especialy after you get off the gas pedal. its all about fuel economy and keeping the engine in the best torque settings. the torque "releases" when you stop trying to accelerate. try and find a straight strech of road or a nice highway entrance ramp and get on the gas. the rpm's will stay up high till you stop trying to accelerate, then drop when you start to cruise. hope that explanation helped. try googling "how a cvt works". it might give you some more insight on why it does what it does and how it does it. thats how i learned about it when i was trying to figure it out for myself.
