Will the radio in a 2011 Outlander Sport play mp3's on a thumb drive? Or will it only play songs from an mp3 player?
If so will it play formats other than mp3 (flac ,ogg vorbis ,wavpack ,monkey's audio)?

It does play mp3's stored on A thumb drive. I used A 32GB thumb drive formatted to FAT32. Each artist in its own folder albums in sub-folders. All mp's were encoded as lame at 320 kbps constant bit rate.
It took about 5 minutes for the radio to index all of the files & folders. Until it's done building the index you can't play anything.
The interface could be a little bit better. You use the right hand **** to choose the folder but then it asks you to select a song which is done using the same ****.
I wouldn't recommend using 32 or even 16 GB thumb drives though. It probably wouldn't take as long to index the files on a 1-4 GB thumb drive. Also it takes FOREVER to get to the last folder if you have a lot of them. Unless you're going on A really long trip I would recommend sticking with 4GB at the most
I haven't found any way to make the information scroll so all the information I get is the first 8 - 10 letters of the song/artist/folder name
I haven't tried playing files from an MP3 player or cell phone yet. That's my next experiment.
