Default 95 Eclipse Turbo Controller Question

Ok..so I joined up to help a friend out. I first off want to appologize because I didnt search first...big no no I know.

A buddy of mine is looking to buy a 95 Eclipse GS-X. His main concern however is the turbo control system.
He says that it has an Apexi electronic turbo boost controller. The "sensor" for this system is bad, as said by the actual owner.
My friend is wondering if the whole system has to be replaced or if just a sensor can be replaced.

Now I know this is very vague, and not as specific as even I would like it to be....so My question to all you Eclipse gods out there is: What do you need to know in order to help me out? I want all the questions you would ask so I can find out through the owner of the vehicle.
Links to other threads are appreciated.

Thanks for your time.
Ranger.

Did you ask he thought the sensor was bad?

Well what is the big deal if the aftermarket controller is bad. You can run a car without a boost controller. Just bypass the solenoid with a vacuum hose. But by "sensor" im assuming he means the boost control solenoid. Which in that case, yes you can just replace the solenoid and keep the electronics.

I did ask the owner and he said "sensor." I have no idea because I have never looked in on or messed with a turbo boost controller.

Im glad you guys gave me your input, and wonder how does this controller work? Does it allow you to dial your boost up or down? How does it bypass boost.

yes, it allows you to dial up or down your boost be regulating the vacuum to the waste gate conroller. the "sensor" he is talking about is probably the solenoid that engineer was talking about and is the mechanical part that the electronics hook to to actually regulate said vac.

The solenoid is a mechanical valve that connects between the turbo and the wastegate to regulate how much air the wastegate actually sees, which in turn then decides how much to open or close and allow more boost pressure. The electronic controller in the car connects to the solenoid and tells it how much to open or close to valve. So if the solenoid is broken then that is an easy fix.
