Sounds like a loose wire somewhere to me or a bad connection. Also, I don't know where your starter is but if exhaust is close and you live somewhere it is real hot, sometimes heat soak will stop a starter and start when the engine cools, but on this car this is probably not the problem since you probably do not have headers that go past the celenoid to the starter. I have also had ignition problems on Fords that when it got hot it would not work. Ford did not want to pay a couple extra parts for a better part.

I'm not going back to read the whole post, but if it is a stick, sometimes there is a sensor on the clutch pedal that goes out, that is the safety so the clutch is pushed in before it will start.

remove the clutch switch so that you can turn the car on without the clutch.

maybe a crappy connection at the ignition or something. Was it trying to turn over before. And just cuz the lights can come on doesnt mean its not the battery, it still could have enough to run lights but not the car.

i had a similiar thing happen with my mr2, one day my horn kept going off and the only way it would shut off is if the lights were on . So i unplugged the battery. The next day i plugged it back in and it has never done it again. Just a quirk i guess
