idk i thought id have only two but i put in four....the one near the MAF is gone it kept messin with the sensor
...but what are they there for? Are they actually plumbed into the intake, or simply tacked on for "looks"?

If they are plumbed in, ie: functional, they are not doing anything positive for you. Basically, you are letting unmetered air into your intake, throwing your A/F ratios off.

they plumbed in there....so ur sayin i may be killing my gas milage?

The little black box behind the cone filter is the mass air sensor (air flow sensor, whatever). It tells the ECU how much air is entering the intake, thus the ECU will know how much fuel to dump. If you are letting air in after the MAS (MAF), you will run way lean. Not a good idea...
