Unhappy Major Leak

Hi...I have a 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse GT. Approximately 6 mos ago, I noticed that my driver's side floor mat was damp. I just thought it was my A/C dripping. Living in Florida, we run our A/C pretty frequently. It has now escalated to quite a bit of what I'm assuming is water. I had my oil changed and asked the mechanic to see if he could find a leak. He was unable to, and explained that A/C leaks would appear on the passenger side, not the driver's side. He pulled my carpet up and my pad is completely full of water, and now my feet are literally pressing in water. He suggested car washes may be sending water down my windshield into my floorboard, but why now and not in the previous 6 years? Does anyone have advice before I take it to an auto shop? Being a woman, I'm a little apprehensive of being 'taken'. Thanks!

Ask boyfriend or husband to spray water on the windshield while you check the leak or do it vice versa. Did you changed something on the engine during 6 months like windshield, cables or anything that you can remember?
