transaxle fluid spec
Hi folks, I bought a 93 eclipse and am fixing it up for use as a commuter vehicle. I know I need to change the transaxle fluid because it is probably what came from the factory, but the haynes manual gives conflicting specs on the same page about if its gear oil or motor oil that goes in there. What am I supposed to use?
While I am asking, what weight do most folks use for the engine oil? I put 10W 30 in it because thats what the previous owner said to use, but the haynes book made it look like 10W40 might be better for down here.

RE: transaxle fluid spec
are you talking about the engine oil or the transmission oil. Depending on the weather conditions will change what type is really goo for you. On average most people will just use 10w30. Thats what i have always used. But if your talking about transmission oil you want to use BG syncroshift gear oil

RE: transaxle fluid spec
Ok, guess the main thing to ask is what is your geograhic location, I live in the Southwest and exclusively use 10w40 for the motor.
For the tranny you can go to any automotive parts store and get transmission/gear oil, I'm running Valvoline Synthetic and have had no issues.
As you are only using the car for a commuter there is no need to go high end/high price.

RE: transaxle fluid spec
Yeh, my transaxle question was driven by the fact that the haynes manual specs 75W85 gear oil in one place and later on the same page showed you could use 10W30, 20W50 and all these otheroils that look like engine or trans fluidsfor the transaxle (there was another graph for the engine oil, I looked several times to make sure I didnt miss something)so I didnt know which one to go with. I can find 75W90 pretty easy and was thinking of just using that as I have never seen 75W85 in a store.
