95 gst with no power
Ok, a buddy of mine just bought a 1995 gst and he has recruited me to help him get it up and running. We are having a weird problem and I've come to the fourm for advice or help. Ok, the problem we are having is the car idles great, and runs great but it has very low power. I'm talking a top speed at wot of about 85 mph. If you didnt know it was a turbo you would just think it was a super slow car. It doesn't smoke at all and he did a compression test and he said it was within spec. We have put in a new gas tank, all fresh gas, new plugs, wires, air filter, oil and oil filter. The cars inspection sticker ran out in 1998 so we assume its been sitting since then. There is no turbo whine or bov sound. I noticed the upper intake tube was collapsing bad under throttle so we replaced it with a stiffer tube with no change in performance. I was just hoping for some advice as to where to look next. We disconnected the exhaust before the cat to make sure it wasnt a clogged cat, no change in performance. When driving the car there is no difference between 1/4 throttle and wot. And, yes we checked to make sure the throttle was going wot. I noticed there is an arm that is connected to what seems to be the wastegate of the turbo, should that move freely or should it be stiff? Any help would be greatly appreciated.[/align]
Boost leak. www.vfaq.com tells you how to make one and how to perform the test.
Hey, you are the guy from the other forum correct?
Sebba he PM'd me telling me that he found out the turbo is now shot in it. Just FYI.
With this new info id say good time to upgrade. You could either go the cheap route and go with the 14b stock turbo from a 1g or go with a Evo III 16g. Both are faily decent. The 16g may require alittle more money and other supporting mods however

Well, I guess I could post my questions here. Ok, we are wanting to do an upgrade to the factory turbo but we aren't wanting to go extreme. What would it take to make a strong running street car? What the the biggest turbo we can go with the factory exhaust manifold? If we do go bigger what all else is needed to make the right hp.Im wondering how big we couldgo and keep themotor stock, or a good compromise.
you realy cant get a bigger turbo and keep the motor STOCK,its impossible, i upgraded to anEvo3 16g,and it bolted right up to the stock manifold with no problem, you just need the 2g install kit,but once you upgrade the turbo the least you need is bigger intercooler,injectors,190 or 255 fuel pump, boost controller, boost gauge,at least(trust me i wanted to go faster and not spend too much money but it just doesnt work that way)anything bigger than that you would need even more mods
well u can get a bigger turbo and boost the same that way u dont have to spend money making it faster that u might not have and ur turbo wont be as stressed if its tuned for lower boost than the peak and when u got the money just turn it UP
I know enough about turbo cars to know that you can't just thow a huge turbo on a stock engine and go. Of course I understand that in order to make the most horsepower possible you have to upgrade intercoolers, injectors, fuel pump, and get other various parts. At this point the car isn't running. I was under the impression that the stock ecu wont boost over 10 psi so why can't we just install the larger turbo to get it running again, then start with the other upgrades so we can increase boost safely. Is this possible? Someone else suggested the evo III, so lets discuss this turbo. What is the max psi it can efficiently handle? What kind of horsepower would I be looking at with full boost? Also, apparently this car has blown two turbos in a short amount of time, we are looking at replacing the oil pump to help ensure this doesn't happen again. Any suggestions? Should we just replace with a stock unit or is there an upgrade available? Thanks for the suggestions so far, I really appreciate it.
What about this turbo, seems ideal for our situation and at about the same cost as the EvoIII with the install kit. Anyone had dealings with this turbo?
Upgrade Garret FP Big 28 Turbo '95-99 $960
This sleeper upgrade turbo takes the horse power from a maximum of 250 with the T-25 up to a possible 360 hp. This quick spooling turbo makes full boost at just over 3,000 rpm and will be happy at up to about 21 psi. 550cc injectors and the Apex AFC are recommended to take full advantage of the additional air flow, but not required if you keep the boost under 14 psi. This turbo remains completely stock in appearance.
This turbo is best for 2G Eclipse guys that dont have plans for huge power and are not chasing a specific number in drag racing. If you had a stock turbo die and dont feel that you or your mechanic will be up to doing the necessary mods to fit one of the 16G series of turbos on, then this is more for you. It installs just like stock and any idjet can do it
