Default '97 GS-T balancer bad, common

Well, the check engine light has been on forever but the car started running rough and there was a clunking noise my wife held the phone up to the engine for me to hear. I had her take it in immediately to get looked at. The fuel regulator finally failed while they had the car and the balancer rubber was bad and the outside ring they said was trying to come off. There are only around 115,000 miles on the car, is this common? The dealer told me that it is not common but they have seen it a few times around 100,000 miles. They are saving the balancer for me to take a look at. And good news, finally got new black carpet for the car, next is the headliner or seat covers to cover the previous owner's cigarette holes, everywhere.

It can be common. You see it more on the 1g's than the 2g's. But thats why alot of people will go though and do a balancer removal on it cuz its just one less thing to break
