Default ac causing serious rev drops

lets say im sitting in my driveway and had just started my car. If i were to turn the AC on, it would take my idle from about 900 to dead. If im driving down the road, and turn it on...once again i lose about 500 rpms...
Isnt something in the computer supposed to correct this automatically for me?

Sounds like a bad idle air control motor, it should compensate the idle for the additional engine load.
