Car sometimes won't shift into 3rd.

Car sometimes won't shift into 3rd.
Greeting. I'm new to both this forum and Mitsubishi in general. I just brought my first 96 Eclipse (also, my first manual) two days ago.
I'm not too good at the whole stick shift thing but I'm definitely improving. My issue is this: Half the time, while I'm driving and I shift from 2nd to 3rd, the shifter will refuse to get into gear. I can feel the gears making contact, somewhat grinding, but it still doesn't get into gear. But the other half of the time, I can get it in gear.
My uncle, who initially taught me how to drive a stick, was never able to get it into 3rd at all.
Again, I can sometimes get into gear while the car is off, but that's only half the time, and after I play around with it for a while.
I've looked around this and other forums but haven't found a solution. The other topics talk about not being able to shift into any gear at all, or something to that extent.
Thanks in advance for the help.

Bleh, I learned better from a buddy than from my uncle.
All the fluids are there, not low, and not black. Two people said it might be the synchro, but one guy from Autozone said there's a possibility that it could be fixed via installing a short throw shifter, and getting new bushings and transmission fluid.
