I thought my wife was seeing things when she called me from some plaza where she parked and couldn't get out because she couldn't shift out of Park. I told her to turn off the engine and turn it back on - didn't help. So I drove to her, turned the car on and shifted just fine.
So I thought she wasn't doing something right.

Well, since then it has happened to me 2-3 times. It looks like the shift interlock is preventing the shifter from sliding all the way to the right.

I have been able to eventually shift by turning off the ignition and turning it back on 3-4 times, also by using the FAST key to lock the doors and unlock, then turn on the ignition.

It looks like a need to schedule a trip to the dealer. But I am posting here to see if it has happened to anyone else and what the fix was.

 

I am pretty sure now that this is tied into the brake lights not always working (recall item).
