Chip mounted on steering column
On my newly-bought 95 Eclipse GS, there's a weird little socket mounted down and to the right of the steering wheel. it has a chip inside, and the letters ATS etched on it. I googled it, nothing. The previous owner said they never noticed it. My friend thinks it's a secondary lock for the car. Any ideas what it is?

Estraw is correct, that is for the starter. Without it, the starter relay is disabled. That's assuming that it is still connected to the starter. If the key isn't needed, then it's not connected.
