Default ??confused?? engine questions

I was at http://www.slowboyracing.com/shop.php?sid=&cat=15

and it is a very helpfull site but I was wondering, does anew short block + a new cylinder head = a ready to go bolt on engine ( other than the break in process) or would I have to break down and get a new long block from this site. Is the site helpful or have you seen any cheaper 4g63 2.0L turbo engines? If I just buy a new engine ONLY would I have to buy other engine bay parts like the alternator and radiator etc.

Or am I trying to take the easy way out buying an engine instead of rebuilding it myself. I need to make some important decisions but lack the expierence and knowledge and us 'newbies' appreciate the help.

slowboyracing is a good site to base information off of but personally, i wouldn't buy from them. I've heard horror storries on how long it's taken for an engine to be assembled and shipped by them. Buying a long block or block and head together is a smart step if you ask me, it cuts out down time and is much simpler. The downside, it's more expensive. What kind of setup are you planning on running? check out CIMotorsports.net this is my all aorund eclipse site that i always put out there, also check out buscharracing.com both of these sites make engines compatible for any kind of setup you may have in mind.

Before you start getting ahead of yourself with built engines and such you might want to make sure you know what your goal is gonna be with the car so you know what youll need to support that

I'm pretty familiar with what I want to do, trust me, my mom isn't gonna let me waste money so I have to know my stuff before I make the deal. I want to upgrade the turbo with slightly lower compression ratios if the stock GST rate isn't low enough ( but thats a whole nother subject ) and I want new intake, short ram cause from what I know you can't put a cold air intake on a turbo ( thats what the intercooler is for?) new headers, exhaust (maybe catback) adjustable cam gears, appropriate cam shafts, intercooler; basically your overall street tuner cause right nowI'm notout to build a Top fuel race car just yet. I just want to be able to leave a few WRX's and Hondas behindand turn some heads at school, ya know?

thanks for the help, but I was wondering how come I'm always hearing from the both of you? Is it b/c your moderators, and how do you become moderators, other than being super smart an' all.

**Also, if I buy an engine or build an engine that is prepared for 400-600 horsepower but I only add mods up to about 300 would this hurt my engine, or is this exactly what your explaining to me when you say "know your goals"**

no, i'm not super smart at all i just know my dsm's.if you are simply looking to leave honda's and sti's in your rear view i have good news for you, you don't need a new engine. and it won't cost you nearly as much asyou may thing. 1 an intercooler is used to cool the compressed air from the turbo before it reaches your engine. The boosted air is very hot b/c it is exhaust gas that turns the turbine. Here is what i would suggest for you
intake (injen), turbo back exhaust, boost gauge, mbc, wideband, 16gturbo, 650 injectors, fmic, ic piping, dsm link and tuning. this alone will run you about 1500-2000 depending on name and purchasing location. with a good tune this will put you up to apx 320-330, with a nice set of 264 or 272 cams and tuned you'll be at 350 leaving EVO's, STI's, Speed 3's, G35's, 350z's in your rear view no problem.

not so hot on the abrev. (abreviations ) so wat is "mbc, wideband, fmic" (something w/ intercooler?), and wat do u mean by "dsm link and tuning" and i must be misled by something else but "turbo backexhaust" sounds funny to me.

I was watching this guy on youtube rebuild his 4g63 (pretty cool video) and on the comments everyone was like " [:-]OMG he touched the bearings it's gonna blow" "no it's cool he washed his hands"no he touched them,.....shame on you" is touching the rod bearings really that serious.

awesome you guys are cool but I still feel really low on the food chain of knowledge but it's time to make my way up. thx alot. but all this knowledge is good though cause I don't want to be on another thread like "my engine blew up OMGI don't know wat to do,it won't start and it's bla bla bla and the little Hondas laughed at me and bla bla bla." hahaha!

we'll have you talking tuner in no time, i was in the same boat as you about 2 years ago, i've come a long way.
MBC = manual boost controller = way to controll the boost from the turbo
Wideband = gauge that shows your air/fuel ratio to tell if you are leaning rich (more fuel than air) or lean (more air than fuel)
FMIC = front mount intercooler
DSMLink = the best tuning device for a first or 2nd generation DSM (eclipse) - it's an engine management system that controlls your timing and air/fuel ratio to get the most power out of your car.
Tuning = puttinga car on a dynograph or street tuning it, hook up a laptop to your engine management that plugs into your car's ECU and controlls how much air and fuel is mixed and the timing at which it fires.
Exhaust breakdown on a turbo car - turbo manifold (usually a spyder looking thing that comes off the exhaust ports on the engine's head), turbo, o2 housing (part that comes off the turbo), downpipe (part that connects the o2 housing to the cat/high flow cat/testpipe), Catalyc Converter/High flow cat/test pipe, then to the catback exhaust. you don't ever have a "header" on a turbo'd car... it's always refered to as a turbo manifold or exhaust manifold.
if you have any other questions feel free to ask, that's what we are here for.... another place to get great info on engines, turbo's, superchargers, nitrous, fuel, tuning, cams, etc etc etc is www.auto.howstuffworks.comthey have great articles of a lot of things with pics to help w/ the explanations.
