Default Engine Temps on RS

I have a 99 RS and the temp guage on this thing is pretty vague. It has an "H" at the top and a "C" at the bottom. On the really hot summer days running in traffic on the interstate, my temp guage is running right next to the hot indicator. I have replaced the thermastat and the fluids are good. I did notice that one of the flaps that covers the radiator next to the fan was missing. Could this be pulling hot air into the fan area causing the high temps? I replaced it this morning and will not know if this fixed the problem until this evening when I leave work. I have never owned a small car like this and wondered if the temps run higher than normal on hot days compared to larger vehicles. Maybe worried for nothing, but this car has 130K on it. Thanx
