Default '02 Montero XLS "average" coolant temps

OK, for starters our Monty XLS is just shy of 139,000 miles, runs great with zero issues and is maintained very well. Matter of fact we are so sure of its reliability we are taking it on a 3000+ journey to from the CA Central Coast to Lackland AFB in Texas next week.

We just had the transmission fluid changed along with the an oil change. Everything else is well within our current maintenance schedule. Coolant was flushed about 20,000 miles ago and it is good condition.

I used an iPhone app (GoPoint) to read the actual coolant temp because It didn't matter if we were coasting down a mountain pass in 20° weather or sitting in heaving traffic in downtown Las Vegas when it's 115° outside, the temp gauge *NEVER* moves!

So I was curious about the normal operating temps and once the Monty is fully warmed up, it runs about 203° around town, 206° on the highway and will go as high as 210° in traffic. It is very consistent at these temps.

It seems a little high to me. I don't know what kind of thermostat I have but I do know it was replaced at 120,000 when we did the timing belt/tune up. Are these temps normal for the 3.5L?

I am not experiencing any type of overheating issue, the coolant is at the correct level and all and everything appears to be working as they should.

Am I being paranoid or what?

Here are the specs. from the FSM.

Standard value:
valve opening temp. 180* +/-36*F

Standard value:
full opening temp. 203*F

Amount of valve lift 10mm or more (0.39 in.)

One thing that can bring the temp. down is using a different proportion of coolant to water. I normally run 50/50 in the hot months and 60/40 in the cold months.

Some like you have a great rig. We just turned 138k on a trip to AZ, and it's running strong. BTW, when you changed your transmission fluid, did you use MM AFT?
Have a great trip.

The stated temp in the manual is pretty spot on at 203° so no need to worry I guess. For some reason I just expected a lower running temp.

We had a Mitsubishi dealer to the transmission flush because of the MM AFT. I wanted to make sure we had the right fluid in the transmission!

We are leaving early tomorrow and no worries with the Monty!

Thanks for the info
