Headlight Socket keeps burning up :(

RE: Headlight Socket keeps burning up :(
The only luck I had today was bad luck.
I went to my girlfriend's house to install my new headlights and everything fell apart. I attached my new headlight socket and inserted my new headlight bulb. Did a quick turn of the headlight **** and everything seemed to be in working order. So I fought like heck with my headlight bulb trying to put it back in place correctly using that VERY annoying pin/spring thing that holds the bulb in place. I finally got it in then turned my headlights back on. After a few seconds there was a loud POP. Guess what happened? My brand new headlight bulb BLEW UP!
Now I'm assuming these aren't the right/correct bulbs to be using. So as I go to put my old working bulbs back in, the stupid little pin/spring came off in my hand.
Are these meant to come all the way out? Or did I break something AGAIN? I was so mad that I just said forget and decided I'll deal with the mess tomorrow.
