Default New Clutch installed. Now Grinding?

i just got done puting in an act 2600/street disk + flywheel into my car and when i start to take off and have to clutch pressed to the floor it sounds like something is grinding and will not go into gear but if i depress the clutch to about 1-2 from the floor it goes into gear smothe and quietly does anyone know why this happends and what i can do to fix it? also what is to point of a break in period what does it really do because people buy new cars all the time and never give them any break in period? So what will happen if i race and dont wait for a full break in period?

i would guess the pressure plate is being compressed too far and rubbing up against the disc

I'm trying to understand the problem here. You say you press the clutch and can't get in gear right? Now you say when you press the clutch 1-2 from the floor it goes in smoothly... What do you mean 1-2 from the floor? Are you saying when you press the clutch all the way in it won't go in gear but if you only press it 1/2 way or so it will? OR are you saying if you pump the clutch a few times that it works right? Sorry if I sound retarded here but I'm trying to get the correct info so I can attempt a correct troubleshooting here.

Sounds like a possible adjustment issue there then... Kinda like Racer said. Maybe you need a clutch pedal adjustment on the car (Do the eclipses have that? My Quest does...).

Yup it sure does. Another thing to note about any clutch install is that you will have to adjust the pedal afterwards. You probably already knew that, but I just want to be sure. Sounds like the pedal is still where it was with the old clutch, but higher now because of the new clutch having more pad material than the old one. So, yeah, just adjust it and let us know how it turns out

Yeah I knew about adjusting the clutch as my car now has a MUCH better ACT clutch but the previous owner didn't adjust it at all so....

yup definetly just the clutch pedal. I had the same thing when i had the 2900 installed. All it is, is a bolt and nut behind the pedal.

as for the other part of your question... common breakin period for a clutch is 300 miles. 500 for the "better safe than sorry" ppl.

I always give 500 miles for ANY break in period for any pads whether it be brake pads or clutch. 500 is a good # to go by I think.
