An O2 senors lets the ECU look at the Oxygen levels in your exhaust and adjusts the fuel timing map to allow you to get better gas milage. I also will lean or richen the car to help it run better depending on what the other sensors say. Normally if you have a car with a Turbo there are two sensors one before and one after the Catalatic Converter to help the car run within the proper range and keep it from detonation of the cylinders. You should always run a Cat. You can find one that allows lots of air to pass through and it won't hurt you horsepower. Also you should always run O2 sensors. If you unplug them the ECU reverts to a closed loop system and dumps more fuel than you need into the chambers. You will not get as much Horsepower that way and could end up damaging your motor.

you dont need to run with a cat like he said as long as you know that you can still pass a state inspection, that is as long as your state has that...but the o2's do like he said. If you want to fix the problem without having them in, you can get an o2 sim. which will make the ecu think its getting readings from the o2 sensors
